Go-to-High School, Go-To-College

This program, established in 1922, emphasizes the importance of high school completion and college education. Alpha Phi Alpha brothers mentor students, providing guidance on academic excellence, college readiness, and career planning to reduce dropout rates and encourage higher education.

The Go-to-High School, Go-to-College program is one of Alpha Phi Alpha’s oldest and most impactful national initiatives, dating back to 1922. It was created to address the alarming educational disparities faced by African Americans, particularly young men, in underserved communities. This program emphasizes the importance of completing high school and pursuing higher education as pathways to personal and professional success. Through mentorship, educational workshops, and community outreach, Alpha Phi Alpha brothers work directly with students to encourage academic excellence, build self-esteem, and provide guidance on navigating the educational system.

The program offers structured sessions that cover topics such as study skills, financial literacy, scholarship acquisition, time management, and college readiness. Additionally, it brings in guest speakers, including college admissions counselors and professionals, to provide firsthand insights into the challenges and opportunities in higher education. Local chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha often partner with schools and community organizations to host college fairs, provide tutoring services, and lead motivational speaking engagements. The aim is to equip students with the tools they need to succeed not only academically but also socially and emotionally. By promoting college attendance and academic achievement, this initiative continues to combat the dropout rates and low college enrollment that disproportionately affect African American youth.
