Brother's Keeper

Introduced in 2007, this program supports elderly members, spouses, and widows of Alpha Phi Alpha. It provides services such as healthcare assistance, social support, and advocacy for elder care, ensuring that aging community members are cared for with dignity.

Brother’s Keeper is Alpha Phi Alpha’s initiative aimed at providing care and support to elderly members of the fraternity, their spouses, widows, and community members. Launched in 2007, the program reflects Alpha Phi Alpha’s commitment to the well-being of its members and the broader African American community, particularly those who may be vulnerable due to age, illness, or financial hardship. The program seeks to ensure that no brother or community member is left behind, offering assistance with daily living, healthcare, and social support.

Through Brother’s Keeper, Alpha Phi Alpha chapters across the country organize a variety of services, including transportation to medical appointments, help with household tasks, financial planning assistance, and social activities that help combat isolation. The program is particularly focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by elderly African Americans, such as disparities in healthcare access and the risk of financial exploitation. By connecting elderly members and their families with local resources and services, the program ensures that they receive the care and support they need to maintain a high quality of life.

In addition to providing direct support, Brother’s Keeper encourages fraternity members to engage in advocacy efforts aimed at improving elder care policies at the local, state, and national levels. The program also fosters intergenerational connections by involving younger fraternity members in service projects that allow them to learn from the experiences of their elders while giving back to those who have paved the way for them. Through Brother’s Keeper, Alpha Phi Alpha demonstrates its ongoing commitment to service and brotherhood, ensuring that all members of the community are treated with dignity and respect throughout their lives.
